Agios
Nikonas is located 64 kilometers south of Kalamata at the borders
of Mesinnia prefecture with Laconia. The village's old name is "Poliana"
which means a flat, sunny piece of land. The village took it's name
after Saint Nikon (Agios Nikonas) who {brought} the Christian relegion
at the area from 980 A.D. to 998 A.D. The village exists for 200
years and consists of 120 traditional stone-built houses. The Metamorfosi
tou Sotiros church is stone-built and is considered as listed building.
1.5
km east of Agios Nikonas there is a place called "Megali Petra"
(Great Stone) known for an old monastery which Saint Nikon established.
"Megali Petra" took it's name by a big stone that rolled from the
top of the mountain and stopped a few meters away from the monastery.
At the top of the mountain at an altitude of 1209 meters, above
sea level, there is another monastery established also by Saint
Nikon in the name of Saints Peter and Paul. Every year the villagers
spend a night in the monastery honoring the two saints. During that
day a local dish called "hondros" is served to the pilgrims who
visit the monastery. Fifty years ago the village had 500 residents
and a school with 80 students. Nowadays there is no school because
there are no children living all year long at Agios Nikon. The population
of the village during the winter is about 40 people, while there
are about 150 in summertime.
People in Agios Nikon are very welcome
with all visitors of their village.
