Kariovouni
is located 55km south of Kalamata and 10km east of Stoupa. The village's
largest settlement is built on the foot of Mavrovouna one of mountain
Taygetos five peeks (1909m). The houses of the settlement are built
along the banks of a stream which flows through the village. Three
bridges connect the two banks making the transportation there much
easier. Some of the sightings worth visiting in Karyovouni, are
the spring with the three pipes providing crystal clear water, under
the shadow of the huge plane-tree (25m.) and the temple of Profitis
Elias. The village is surrounded by a forest of walnut trees and
a variety of bushes and species of flowers.
The
second settlement of Karyovouni called Driopi is built lower on
the mountain's foot with view to the Messinian Gulf and the olive
grooves of Agios Nikolaos and Stoupa. During the Greek revolution
against the Turkish occupation (1821) the village was important
for the region with its own authority which participated in the
region council. Sightings of Driopi; the home-castle of Goudelei
of remarkable architecture, the old oil-press of the settlement
and the beautiful green landscape.

During the past 20 years a number
of significant projects have improved the living in Kariovouni.
Some of them are the installation of the water-supply network and
the bus connection with Kalamata twice a day. The area is suitable
for farming, bee-keeping and making use of marble deposits, as well
as spring water. Recently many who migrated from Karyovouni have
returned, repairing their houses using them as a summer resort.
